Concept and discourse of the „Jewish Luftmensh" has a double meaning around 1900: It functions not only as a metaphor for what the 19th century bequeathed to the 20th in form of the "Jewish Question", but also as a critical comment on modernity as a whole. In cooperation with the field of the so called "Völkerpsychologie" - highly regarded at that time - a kind of national social psychology was established, in which Jews were perceived and described as "rootless". The book will analyze the cultural upspring, development and change of this metaphor with examples from economy, theology, philosophy, science and literature.   In der Alltagssprache verweist »Luft« auf das Unsichtbare, Unstete, Irreal-Phantastische. Historisch fand die Vorstellung vom »Luftmenschen« in einem überraschend breiten, wenig erforschten Diskurs um 1900 Resonanz. Vor allem die Wahrnehmung jüdischer Existenz in der Moderne wurde derart bebildert. Dafür schien die diasporische Lebensrealität der Juden ebenso zu sprechen wie die notorisch kritisierte soziale Verortung, bestimmte Berufsmuster oder andere als »typisch jüdisch« wahrgenommene Gemeinsamkeiten. Aber auch ganz allgemeine Phänomene der Zeit wie Migration und Verstädterung wurden mit der Metapher vom »Luftmenschen« kritisch von vermeintlich natürlicher Verwurzelung abgerückt. Nicolas Bergs Buch über Entstehung und Bedeutungswandel der Metapher Luftmensch geht diesen Zusammenhängen von symbolischer Rede und essentialistisch interpretierter Realität in ganz unterschiedlichen Kontexten nach. Anhand von Beispielen aus Theologie, Philosophie, Ökonomie, Wissenschaft und Literatur wird deutlich, wie sich die Kennzeichnung jüdischer Existenz als »Luftvolk« von der Selbstironie ihrer Begriffsursprünge löste, immer stärker in das Arsenal antisemitischer Polemik einwanderte und schließlich zu einer Begründungsfigur der gegen Juden
